Business process improvement

$1.00

The organization may be a for-profit business, a non-profit organization, a government agency, or any other ongoing concern. This was the first methodology developed that focused away from the production processes to address the service and support process. It was developed within IBM as a result of the IBM president John F. Akers putting out a Corporate Instruction in the early 1980’s requiring the rest of IBM operations to upgrade their processes so that they were at least as good as the production processes. At that time the production processes were required to be at a Cpk of 1.4. To measure and meet these performance goals required major improvements in IBM’s business processes. To accomplish this, IBM’s Business Process Improvement methodology was developed. On March 13,1984 after the Business Process Improvement was under way at IBM, John Akers stated at the American Electronics Association seminar on Quality in Boston, Our studies show that more than 50 percent of the total cost of billing relates to preventing, catching, or fixing errors. This approach was first documented outside of IBM by H. James Harrington while at Ernst & Young[2] and then in Harrington’s 1991 book entitled Business Process Improvement – the Breakthrough Strategy for Total Quality, Productivity, and Competitiveness[1] published by McGraw-Hill. More detailed information about the methodology was documented in Harrington’s 1997 book Business Process Improvement Workbook-Documentation, Analysis, Design, and Management of Business Process Improvement[3] also published by McGraw-Hill.

It should be noted that BPI focuses on "doing things right" more than it does on "doing the right thing". In essence, BPI attempts to reduce variation and/or waste in processes, so that the desired outcome can be achieved with better utilisation of resources.

Price: $1.00

Well, it appears that this

Description

After installing Drupal, I cannot login anymore after logging out for the first time. That is to say, after typing username and password and hitting enter, the screen refreshes and I seem not to have logged in. I do not get any error messages about using wrong names etc...

After searching the forums I have also concluded that my login problem is NOT related to:

the double login phenomenon

cookies

cache

However, the following hack allows me to login normally. The hack consists of commenting out three lines in user.module:

//$old_session_id = session_id();
//session_regenerate_id();
//db_query("UPDATE {sessions} SET sid = '%s' WHERE sid = '%s'", session_id(), $old_session_id);

This leads me to believe that the real cause of the problem lies with the PHP settings on the server of my webhost. My questions are:

What am I potentially compromising by commenting those lines out in user.module?
What other solutions are there?

Thanks,
Kdebaas

Drupal 4.7.4, PHP 5.1.6, IIS 5, mysql client api 5.0.22
Using browsers: Firefox 2 and IE 6
Installing Drupal 5 also didn't get me past the login screen...

How to Troubleshoot Black Hole Router Issues

On a TCP/IP-based wide area network (WAN), communication over some routes may fail if an intermediate network segment has a maximum packet size that is smaller than the maximum packet size of the communicating hosts–and if the router does not send an appropriate Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) response to this condition or if a firewall on the path drops such a response. Such a router is sometimes known as a “black hole” router.

You can locate a black hole router by using the Ping utility, which is a standard utility that is installed with the Microsoft Windows TCP/IP protocol. You can then use one of three methods of fixing or working around black hole routers.

When a network router receives a packet that is larger than the size of the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) of the next segment of a communications network, and that packet’s IP layer “don’t fragment” bit is flagged, the router is expected to send an ICMP “destination unreachable” message back to the sending host.

If the router does not send a message, the packet might be dropped, causing a variety of errors that vary with the program that is communicating over the unsuccessful link. (These errors do not occur if a program connects to a computer on a local subnet.) The behavior may seem intermittent, but closer examination shows that the behavior can be reproduced, for example, by having a client read a large file that is sent from a remote host.

Essbase and Oracle Process Manager and Notification (OPMN) Server

Oracle Process Manager and Notification server (OPMN) enables you to monitor and control the Essbase Agent process. You add Essbase Agent information to opmn.xml to enable OPMN to start, stop and restart the agent using the OPMN command line interface. OPMN can automatically restart the Essbase Agent when it becomes unresponsible, terminates unexpectedly, or becomes unreachable as determined by ping and notification operations.

If you configured more than one instance of Essbase Server on a single machine, each instance has its own OPMN, its own start scripts, and its own log files. You must update each instance’s copy of opmn.xml so that each OPMN has unique ports for communication.

See Appendix H, “OPMN Service Failover for Essbase Server” and Oracle Essbase Database Administrator’s Guide, “Managing Essbase Using OPMN“.

Downloading the Installation Files

Download the installation files from “Oracle Enterprise Performance Management System” page of the Oracle E-Delivery (http://edelivery.oracle.com) site into /download_location. Note that some files are posted by platform; make sure to download the files for the platform you will be using.

Review the Media Pack Readme on the Oracle E-Delivery web site to see which ZIP files to download depending on the products you own and the platform you are deploying those products on.

Unzip the EPM downloaded files into /download_location, if you are prompted with a message that any files may already exist be sure to click “Yes” to overwite the existing file(s). Be sure to unzip the files into the same exact directory /download_files. The assemblies are automatically unzipped into an /assemblies directory under /download_files. For information about specific assemblies related to the various product components see the section “Component Installation By Tier and Installation Assemblies” on page 29 of the “Oracle Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management System Installation and Configuration Guide RELEASE 11.1.2“. NOTE: Make sure to check that you are using the latest up to date Installation Guide, the one I am using for my installation during the month of December 2010 contains the notation “Updated: November 2010? and I believe is the 1st update since this release shipped.

NOTE: Even though you need the EPM-Foundation Services ZIP files on each machine in the environment, install Foundation Servers Web applications on only one machine. On the machine you which you plan to administer the WebLogic Server, you must install all Web applications for all applications you plan to deploy on any machine in the environment. For more information see “Installing EPM System Products in a Distributed Environment” on page 89.

EPM Oracle Home

The default EPM Oracle home location is MIDDLEWARE_HOME/EPMSystem11R1. In addition, common internal components used by the producs are installed in EPM Oracle home. Choose the location carefully to ensure that the location has enough disk space for all of the products you are installing on that machine. You CANNOT change the location at a later time.

The EPM Oracle home location is defined in the system environment called EPM_ORACLE_HOME. The EPM Oracle home directory structure must be the same on each machine. Additionally, during configuration some products deploy components to MIDDLEWARE_HOME/user_projects/epmsystem1. Deplopyed components include the following:

Go Inside Search to get the most out of Google

6/16/2011 03:30:00 PM

On Tuesday, we held a media event in San Francisco to introduce new and faster ways to search using your voice, an image or Instant Pages. We also launched Inside Search, a new website that hosted a live stream of the event. Inside Search contains a wealth of information about search and we wanted to let you know more about it.

When providing detailed information about a new search feature, we often link to an official landing page from the blog post (such as this one for Google Instant or this one for Google Images with sorting). Since there wasn’t one central place you could find all that information, we created a one-stop shop for all search-related features, tips and tricks. Thus, following the release of the new Inside Search blog, we bring you a deeper look Inside Search.

Whether you’re a beginner to web search or a search master, you’ll find all the search shortcuts you need under the Features section of the site. For example, most people don’t realize that the Google search box is a calculator, a world clock and a unit converter. You can also discover tips like how to use translated sites to search for [crepe recipes] on French sites or how to use an asterisk in a phrase or question so Google can fill in the blanks.

A precious metals chain

The global financial crisis in 2008, followed by the concerns about growth in developed countries, especially among European nations, led to investors going for risk aversion.

Amar Singh Deo, head, Commodities and Currencies Research, Aditya Birla Money, says: "Currencies, once considered a safe avenue, took a major hit.

Equity markets lost a lot of their value and investor confidence was shaken.

During this time gold seemed the safest bet from a long term perspective."

Simultaneously, the dollar took a major hit, which benefited gold owing to its inverse relationship with the greenback.

"Further, the price of gold has also been driven by huge liquidity infused into the system by many governments, including the US, UK and Japan to combat the downturn," says Naveen Mathur, associate director, Commodities & Currencies, Angel Broking.

It seems to workxf

Drupal's flexible theming system has made lots of amazing site designs possible, from the respectably contemporary White House web site to Pete Droge's Drupal-driven Flash masterpiece. What most Drupal sites don't show off, however, is what content editors work with every day: the notoriously unglamorous content creation, editing, and management screens. Tools for those users are often neglected, even though their success is critical for any content-driven site.

At this year's DrupalCon in Chicago (and last year's Web Content Conference), Karen McGrane and I co-presented on content strategy and the importance of the backend experience for successful sites. In both presentations, we focused on techniques for discovering what pain points are most acute for a site's editors, and common patterns for solving those problems. The response we've received at both conferences has been unanimous: "Once we know what kind of tools are needed, how can we build them in Drupal?"

The great news is that there are quite a few flexible tools to streamline your Drupal site's day-to-day content management workflow without writing any custom code. In this article we'll explore a couple of the easy wins, highlight modules that can be used to build out more complex tools, and give you some useful next steps for taming the backend beast.

I illustrate my books

When I finally approached her table, I realised she was inking a different sketch on the flyleaf for each person. So kind! So PR-savvy! But really, SO kind.

I’d brought along my copy of Margi Preus’s Heart of a Samurai , for which Tamaki had done the cover illustration, and she drew me a picture of the novel’s protagonist, a fourteen-year-old Japanese boy. Don’t miss the birds in the background.

Oracle Corporation

Beginning in 2003, Oracle began to maneuver for control of the PeopleSoft company. In June 2003, Oracle made a $7 billion bid in a hostile corporate takeover attempt. In February 2004, Oracle increased their bid to approximately $9.4 billion, a 33% increase; this offer was also rejected forthwith by PeopleSoft's Board of Directors. Later that month, the U.S. Department of Justice filed suit to block Oracle, on the grounds that the acquisition would break anti-trust laws. In September 2004, the suit was rejected by a U.S. Federal Judge, who found that the Justice Department had not proven its anti-trust case. In October, the same decision was handed down by the European Commission. Though Oracle had reduced its offer to $7.7 billion in May, it again raised its bid in November to $9.4 billion, marking a 14% increase. In December 2004, Oracle announced that it had signed a definitive merger agreement to acquire PeopleSoft for approximately $10.3 billion. The following January, Oracle announced plans to cut approximately 9% of the 55,000 staff of the combined companies, maintaining at least 90% of PeopleSoft's product development and support staff.[4] Oracle moved to capitalize on the perceived strong brand loyalty within the JD Edwards user community by rebranding former JD Edwards products. Thus PeopleSoft EnterpriseOne became JD Edwards EnterpriseOne and PeopleSoft World became JD Edwards World. Oracle has announced that a new product, Fusion, is to be released in the near future. Oracle says Fusion will take the best aspects of the PeopleSoft, JD Edwards, and Oracle Applications and merge them into a new product suite.

DLZP

DLZP Group was founded by a former Oracle Consultant who recognized a gap existed in the delivery of client services. While onsite consulting services were fundamental to a significant segment of their client base, there remained those customers who, while in need of technical assistance and instruction, did not necessarily need service delivery through an on-site specialist. With this notion in mind, a new idea was hatched -- to offer a range of service options that, while including the traditional consulting approach, would also comprise a wide range of online offerings --a virtual consulting engine-- to meet the demands of the more tech-savvy clients. The result is the DLZP Solution, a combination of the traditional delivery method coupled with a web-based innovation that provides a more tailored, cost-effective consulting experience.
